The area of Basra Governorate is (19730) nineteen thousand seven hundred and thirty square kilometers, which represents (4.4%) of the total area of Iraq and includes (16) administrative units (sub-district) forming (7) districts.
Basra is located in the southern part of Iraq and is bordered by the governorates of Maysan and Dhi Qar in the north, Muthanna in the west, and the international borders with the State of Kuwait in the south and the Republic of Iran in the east.
Basra's climate is dry and hot in the first months of summer however the last months of summer are considered as it is high levels of humidity, the weather is cold and rainy in winter, and the temperature on some winter nights reaches 0 degrees.

Basra is the main port of Iraq, because it includes the port of Umm Qasr, and some other ports, in addition to the work of the central and local governments to complete the great port of Al-Faw, which will put Basra on the map of the global economy and enhance its economic and geographical position. The city of Basra was recognized as the capital of the Iraqi national economy by Parliament in April 2017, and many advantages were granted in the Basra Law, to give Basra unique privacy because of its great importance. The economy of Basra includes a variety of industries, perhaps the most important of which is the oil and gas industry, where the headquarters of the Basra Oil Company, the Basra Gas Company, and some of the largest Iraqi oil fields are located. The General Company for Petrochemical Industries and the Southern Fertilizer Company have also contributed to the promotion of national industries.
Basra also has great opportunities in the agricultural sector, and the reason for this is the fertile agricultural lands in Basra, where it produces rice, corn, barley, and dates, transportation, and communication services are among the main industries in it. Basra is connected to the neighboring countries, border crossings, and ports with a network of highways of international standards with a network of railways that the Ministry of Transport is working to rehabilitate and develop to activate the dry channel. These networks are linked to other neighboring countries such as the State of Kuwait, the Republic of Turkey, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Iran the Islamic Republic, and the Syrian Arab Republic, and the central government is working to develop these networks to meet Iraq’s aspirations for the future. The increasing population growth in this city and its remarkable expansion in recent years, and the entry of many foreign companies and institutions, prompted the local government in the city of Basra, with the support of the central government, to develop stimulating strategic plans to start developing and expanding this city, working on establishing solid infrastructure, and working to attract foreign and Arab companies and To invest in all different sectors and harness all available efforts to serve Basra and its authentic people.
